Los Niños de Leonardo y Meredith is a Massachusetts 501(c)(3) committed to providing educational opportunities for impoverished children in the Dominican Republic. With an all-volunteer staff in the United States, 100% of every donation goes directly to providing children's education.
Los Niños originated as a dream by founder Anne Post, and realized with the help of Philip Jordan and many other amazing supporters. The school blends the U.S. educational model, curriculum, and testing with important Dominican customs and teaching methods. With a 7-1 student-to-teacher ratio, Los Niños can ensure that each child receives adequate personal attention.
Over the past 7 years, the success of the school has surpassed the wildest dreams of its founders. Currently, as we prepare to enter into our 8th year, we have two groups of students at Los Niños: one class of ten students about to enter third grade, and seventeen of our original students who have moved on to an excellent private high school (tuition paid by Los Niños). These students have done exceptionally well, both academically and socially, despite the circumstances from which they came (many of whom did not know their birthdays or last names, and were found asking for money and food in the streets). The success of these students is evident not only in their academic success, but also in their smiles and healthy friendships formed with one another. The gratitude they feel for this opportunity is abundantly clear, and many of them have already set personal and professional goals that would simply never have been possible without this program.
Colegio Los Niños currently operates in a small two-room schoolhouse near the center of Las Terrenas. Although the location is central and the rent is affordable, there is no room to expand in order to add additional classrooms, and the program hangs on the whim of the landlord (property protections in leases are not as strong as in the U.S.). our long term goal at Los Niños is to purchase our own plot of land to build a school large enough to accommodate all of its students.
Our goal is to pay for our program as well as the tuition of our graduates to attend high school and college. Any donation, monetary or word-of-mouth, large or small, is GREATLY appreciated!
